Dr. Teresa Gernon, DVM


Dr. Teresa Gernon co-owned Magazine Street Animal Clinic with her husband, Dr. Scott Gernon since 2003. They have since rebranded a new, state-of-the art, facility – East Riverside Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Gernon grew up in New York and southern Illinois and moved to the Baton Rouge area while in high school. She attended Louisiana State University and majored in Pre-Veterinary Medicine before she went on to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Gernon was awarded her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1997.

Internal medicine, dentistry, and soft-tissue surgery are among her many professional interests. Dr. Gernon is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Association, and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association.

“When you’re a veterinarian, every day is a new experience and you’re always learning,” Dr. Gernon said of her profession.

She and her husband are the proud parents of three children: Sophia, Avery, and Bryce. The family includes three dogs: Marcel, Abby, and Luke, as well as three dwarf rats, three snakes, and eight pet chickens. When not busy with her duties at the hospital, Dr. Gernon enjoys gardening, exercising, and cooking.


Dr. Scott Gernon, DVM


Previously co-owning Magazine Street Animal Clinic, Dr. Scott Gernon now co-owns rebranded East Riverside Veterinary Hospital with his wife Dr. Teresa Gernon. Dr. Scott Gernon is a native of Louisiana. “My father owned a feed store for forty-plus years. It’s where I spent a lot of my childhood,” said Dr. Gernon about why he wanted to become a veterinarian. “Seeing him help livestock and pets made me want to do more.”

Dr. Gernon attended the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology in 1996. He went on to attend the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. He has received continuing education certifications in ultrasound, video otoscopy, dentistry and orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Gernon is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Association, and the American Veterinary Dental Society.

Along with his busy professional and family life, Dr. Gernon finds a little bit of time for leisure activities. He enjoys taking his three dogs, Marcel, Abby, and Luke, for long walks. Dr. Gernon also shares his home with two corn snakes, Corny and Carnage and three dwarf rats, Cheerio, Rice Krispy, and Choconana. His hobbies include fishing, boating, landscaping, working out, and home renovation. Most of all, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, Sophia, Avery, and Bryce.


Dr. Johanna K. Ecke, DVM | Associate Veterinarian


Johanna started working at hospital June of 2011. She enjoys developing pain management plans, administering acupuncture, performing soft tissue surgeries, internal medicine, oncology, and preventative care. Dr. Ecke is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association and the Southwest Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association.

She loves watching patients grow up and see the special bond that pets share with their families. She loves making a difference in every pet’s life and feels incredibly honored to care for every pet that comes through these hospital doors. She completed her undergraduate degree at Tulane University where she double majored in Ecology/Evolutionary Biology and French. There she was awarded the Outstanding Student Award in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Dr. Ecke then went to the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, graduating in the top ten percent of her class.

Dr. Ecke grew up in Great Falls, Montana. There she was always rescuing injured or stray animals (even bugs!). She adopted a dog named Tigger, who was riddled with medical issues that became her main inspiration for becoming a veterinarian and wishing that every pet could have a long, happy life. During this time, she started volunteering at the SPCA. Then she began working at Magazine Street Animal Clinic from 2005-2007.

At home, Dr. Ecke has three rescue dogs named Buck, Leona, Poquita and fosters a fourth dog named Sugar. She also has a guinea pig named Artichoke and six chickens! In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, kayaking, spending time with her dogs and going to the beach.


Dr. Kevin Zamer, DVM | Associate Veterinarian


Dr. Kevin Zamer has been our Associate Veterinarian here since July 2013. His professional interests within pet care include emergency medicine, dentistry, and surgery. He’s a member of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Zamer attended Tulane University and graduated in 2007 with a degree in Economics and Pre-Vet. He continued to follow his dream and further his education by attending Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduating in 2013, starting his journey with Magazine Street Animal Clinic around this time.

Growing up in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Zamer spent most of his summers taking care of the animals around the neighborhood he grew up in. Before applying to veterinary school, he worked at multiple clinics, including Magazine Street Animal Clinic for three years.

In his spare time, Dr. Zamer enjoys fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He has four mixed breed dogs – Rye, Sierra, Malik, and Sheep.
