Dr. Johanna Ecke joined our team in June of 2011.
She completed her undergraduate degree at Tulane University where she double majored in Ecology/Evolutionary Biology and French. There she was awarded the Outstanding Student Award in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Dr. Ecke then attended Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, graduating Cum Laude and in the top ten percent of her class. Growing up in Great Falls, Montana, she was always rescuing injured or stray animals (even bugs!). During her time as an undergraduate student, she started volunteering at the LA-SPCA where she adopted her third dog, Tigger. He was riddled with medical issues from a young age, and became her main inspiration for becoming a veterinarian and focusing on pain management and quality of life. After graduating from Tulane, she began working at Magazine Street Animal Clinic as a Veterinary Assistant from 2005-2007.
In practice, Dr. Johanna loves watching her patients grow up and seeing the special bond that pets share with their families. The relationships that she develops with her beloved clients and patients is the thing she loves most about being a veterinarian. Practicing Fear-Free veterinary medicine is very important to Dr. Jo, and she enjoys being able to work with patients with behavior or anxiety issues. She loves so many different things about being a general practitioner, and has a particular affinity for soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, oncology, and pain management/anesthesia.
Dr. Ecke is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association. She loves making a difference in every pet's life and feels incredibly honored to care for every pet that comes through our hospital doors. At home, Dr. Ecke has seven rescue dogs - four pit bull/bully mixes named Buck, Leona, Poquita and Sugar; a rescued pomeranian/chihuahua mix named Sushi; a “foster fail” Great Pyrenees mix named Juno; and a little chihuahua that fell into her lap as a senior named Bitty. She adopted two senior cats in 2021, named Jasmine and Gigi. Her urban farm also includes two guinea pigs, two rabbits, and 12 chickens. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, kayaking and paddle boarding, spending time with her pets and going to the beach.
